About the Event
Wegmans is hosting a drug take-back event on Saturday, April 22, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at their Holt Road location, as well as many of their other stores. This event gives community members the opportunity to remove potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs from their homes. The service is free and anonymous. Only pills and patches will be accepted – no liquids, needles, or sharps.
No appointment is necessary. Look for a drop off location in the parking lot. Registration is not required, but it will allow us to email you a reminder in advance of the event.
The event is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA’s) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, an effort meant to prevent the misuse of potentially dangerous unused, unwanted, or expired prescription and over the counter medications by safely disposing of them.
Why is this important?
These initiatives are aimed at preventing prescription drug misuse, accidental poisonings and overdoses.
- Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
- One in five teens have misused prescription drugs.
- One in four adult opioid prescriptions results in addiction.
- Additionally, more than 160 children go to the emergency room daily from accidental overdose.
The DEA also reports that Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards, making events such as this a great opportunity to safely dispose of unused, expired, or unwanted medications.
