Forest Trail
Hot Cocoa Hike November 7

Experiencing nature together is a healthy way to reduce stress and strengthen family bonds. Check out Friends of Webster Trails’ Hot Cocoa Hike Saturday, November 7 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The family-friendly hike will be at Whiting Road Nature Preserve (on Whiting Road north of Shoemaker). It’s about 2 miles long and participants earn a hot cocoa packet at the end of the hike to enjoy with their family at home. Participants are asked to keep physically distanced, wear masks and warm clothing, and bring a flashlight. See details and sign up here.

Webster Headlines
  • WHEN:DFCC volunteers greeted visitors to the Webster Farmers Market throughout October, sharing information, free T-shirts, and reusable bags with shoppers.

  • Webster’s DEA Drug Take-Back event on October 24 collected a whopping 390 pounds of unused prescription medication from Webster households. Thank you to all who participated. The next national Take-Back day is in April.

  • As part of our Red Ribbon Week activities, we invited the community to complete coloring pages, share their favorite ways to de-stress, and post them to social media to be included in a prize drawing. Congratulations to Madison E. for winning our prize (WHEN T-shirt and Yolickity gift card) and to all who shared their masterpieces!

According to the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the percentage of Webster high school students that report having tried e-cigs/vaping is 37%, marijuana 24%, and cigarettes 11%.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a great reminder to talk to kids about maintaining healthy lungs. The American Lung Association lists a handful of ways to keep our lungs healthy, including:

  • Don’t smoke

  • Avoid exposure to indoor pollutants like radon

  • Minimize exposure to outdoor air pollution

  • Prevent infection

  • Get regular check-ups

  • Exercise

The CDC adds:

  • Stay away from secondhand smoke

  • Get screened for lung cancer if you are at high risk

Click here for tips on talking to kids. It’s important for our community’s young people to know that particulates and chemicals from vape products harm lung health. It may be helpful to remind kids that lung health is critical to achieving their goals, especially for athletes. For those wanting to quit, here are resources to help: https://teen.smokefree.gov/ and https://truthinitiative.org/thisisquitting.

Spotlight

JEFF TARA, BRANDVUE DESIGN

We’d like to thank Jeff Tara of BrandVue Design for the outstanding work he did creating a logo and brand standards for WHEN:DFCC. As we build our coalition and work to empower Webster kids to grow up strong and substance-free, we are continually thankful we have such a positive visual identity to share with the community.

Jeff is currently working on his 2,000th job since opening in Webster in 2012. He's very active in the community, volunteering for multiple Webster organizations and quietly supporting his neighbors. He always brings a positive "can-do" spirit along with his talent and expertise.

Thank you, Jeff!

Safer Lock Boxes (to secure meds) and Deterra deactivation bags (for safe disposal at home) are still available to Webster residents free of charge (while supplies last). To pick one up, visit the Webster Chamber of Commerce, Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. – no appointment needed.
